Does speed really kill? Sometimes, yes, but when the speed limits are set artificially low, and enforcement is targeted to those areas where the limit is far below traffic speed, then all the speed kills campaign does is keep drivers complacent about paying fines that don't improve safety.

Aside from the technically false statement that "speed kills" I agree that its more a speed tax than anything else.

Speed doesn't kill, never will. Acceleration (positive or negative) can kill but speed can't.

Speed doesn't kill, until you get enough G-force to stop your life signs.

Stupidity, and coming to an abrupt stop without slowing down first, is what kills.

The laws of physics self-enforce, and don't employ police as revenue collectors.

"We can't stop, it's too dangerous, we have to slow down first"

"Why don't we take a five minute break... Smoke if you've got 'em."

I really hate how they distort the facts around speed zones and speed related accidents. It's extremely hard to get valid data due to all the manipulation the transportation departments and police departments due to justify funding. For instance, they HATE being forced to limit speed related fatalities specifically to excessive speed to the point it was the cause of the accident. They LOVE to lump all accidents they can under "speed was a factor". Of course it was a factor, you would be damn impressive if you could wreck a car traveling 0 MPH. Of those, they also take "speed" to mean a deviation from the speed limit, not a speed that was measurably unsafe in it's contribution to the crash.

The reality is that speed of a vehicle is rarely the reason it crashed, but it is by far the best for generating revenue.
